You cannot afford to spare any effort to ensure the security and protection of your loved ones and property against intruders. The most basic security measure is to ensure all entrances from the main door, back door, side entrances and even garage doors can be properly locked.
The garage door warrants special attention mainly because it is often overlooked. Some garages connect directly to the main house, which make it more important to make sure they can be secured properly when needed. Even if the garage may be built as a separate structure, it should still be kept secure because it houses valuable possessions like the car and other items.
Here are some tips to help determine if your garage door requires the attention of professionals to remain in good working condition:
Rusty and Squeaky
If your garage door sounds like it’s whining a lot, you may want to check on the hinges, roller tracks, and latches. See if it is rusty, and maybe even give it a squirt or two of plain old vegetable oil, but never use WD-40 for some quick remedy, or you may eventually face other problems.
If this does not resolve the issue, call a professional locksmith or door repairman so they can check and get it fixed immediately. There may be some other item causing the blockage, preventing the door from closing as smoothly as it should. You may just get hurt or make the problem worse if you try to fix it yourself.
If you wait longer, the rusting or corrosion may cause the garage door to get stuck and fail to close and open at all. Unless you’re comfortable leaving items in your garage just out in the open, you would want to get that problem resolved at the soonest possible opportunity. Worse, the garage door may eventually fall off completely due to severe corrosion.
Maintenance while transitioning from one season to the next, particularly winter to spring, is important in keeping your garage door fully functional. If it is made of wood, for example, exposure to moisture and heat can damage it in the long run. At the very least, your garage door should be weatherstripped. Just make sure the weatherstrip will not get in the way of the sides of the doors, which may impede proper opening and closing.
Spring is also the perfect time to touch up seals and paints to keep the material of the garage door protected throughout the rest of the year.
It would be great if you can make routine spring checkups a regular thing to have a clearer picture of the condition of your garage door. Don’t wait until the last minute before you prepare your garage door for the winter season. It may be too late by then, and not only will your garage door be at risk of deterioration, but even its interior, especially if moisture gets in.
Check for Balance
The garage door should be properly balanced, otherwise it will not function efficiently. Because it moves up and down, tilting forward and up, the weight of the garage door must be balanced just right so the door lever’s functionality does not become compromised. Otherwise, it may not be able to bear the load, which may cause an accident such as the garage door suddenly slamming on top of your car hood or roof as you are driving through it. The counterweight springs system must be calibrated to ensure that this scenario does not happen. But don’t try to adjust the springs by yourself. Call for professional technicians to do it for you.
